No reason for US Mint to stop selling Gold coins to American investors: Gold Coin

The U.S. Mint last failed to produce gold coins in 2009, yet frequently halts sales of some items temporarily due to a low supply of gold. Some say that the law mandating that the U.S. Mint only use U.S.-mined gold hampers the nationĂ¢€™s coin minting ability, but others claim that there is an abundance of U.S. gold to be had.

Gold Coin, a US-based precious metals investment firm, has said that there is no reason for the US Mint to suspend sales of American Eagle Gold coins citing the reason that they have exhausted its supplies.

Stewart Lawson, Vice President of Marketing for Gold Coin, says that his company has lots of U.S.-mined gold in its vaults that the U.S. Mint is more than welcome to buy. “It’s an atrocity that they want to keep American investors from buying gold," Lawson said. “They are selling twice as many as last year yet the want to suspend the coin’s production, and that is a situation where two and two doesn’t make four."

Indeed, sales of 1/10 ounce gold Eagles are up 118 percent over the same period last year. The U.S. Mint has sold 175,000 ounces of American Eagle gold coins in April alone, which is on pace to challenge the monthly record of 231,500 ounces that was set in December 2009. According to the Huffington Post, that record takes all weights of the American Eagle gold coin into consideration.

In addition to the suspension of 1/10 ounce gold Eagle sales, Gold Coin has also reported that American Eagle silver bullion coins are on backorder due to the U.S. Mint’s lack of sufficient production of those coins.

Barrick cuts 2013 Gold,Silver price assumptions

Barrick was expecting an average silver price of $32/oz in 2013 but has lowered the forecast to $24/oz.

Canada based Barrick Gold, one of the world’s top gold miners by market capitalization, has reduced its key price assumptions for gold, copper and silver in 2013 due to lower than expected prices in Q1 and the downside trend that followed in April.
The price of gold and copper are the main drivers of Barrick's profitability and cash flow, while the silver price is relevant for the economics of its Pascua Lama project on the Chilean-Argentine border.
Gold production fell 4.5% to 1.797 million ounces, while gold sales remained essentially flat at 1.747 million.
Barrick produced 1.80Moz of gold in Q1 at all-in sustaining and had total cash costs of $919/oz and $561/oz, respectively.
Full year gold production guidance is 7.0M-7.4Moz at total cash costs of $610-$660/oz. Full year all-in sustaining cost guidance has been reduced to $950-$1,050/oz from the previous guidance of $1,000-1,100/oz, Barrick said in its results report.
Barrick originally set a gold price forecast of $1,700/oz for this year. The new estimate sees gold averaging $1,450/oz in 2013.
Although silver prices do not significantly impact Barrick's operating earnings, cash flows or gold total cash costs, they will have "a significant impact on the overall economics" of the Pascua Lama project, which is to produce 35Moz of silver in its first five years.
Barrick was expecting an average silver price of $32/oz in 2013 but has lowered the forecast to $24/oz.
Silver averaged $30.11/oz in Q1 but April has seen a steady drop in price. Silver closed at $22.91/oz on Wednesday.
Barrick has hedge protection on 65Moz of silver from 2013-18, inclusive, with an average floor price of $23/oz and an average ceiling price of $53/oz.

SBV Gold trade activities under scrutiny

Vietnam would check if the SBV had fulfilled its responsibility towards gold trading and gold mobilization and lending.

Vietnam finally announced measures to ensure a free and fair gold market after getting so many complaints about market irregularities.
The measures also include monetizing activities of country's central bank. The Government Inspectorate would check if the SBV had fulfilled its responsibility towards gold trading and gold mobilization and lending.
The period for review is from January 2009 to March 2013, which is subject to extension in case of necessity. The inspection will last 60 days since the date the decision is announced.
Vietnam gold market has witnessed a lot of fluctuations recently. Gold price suddenly went down last week, urging people to buy gold. The gap between the local and global gold prices remains wide, sometimes reaching VND6 million.
However, SBV is inconsistent in the policy for management of the gold market. In November last year, Governor Nguyen Van Binh told the National Assembly that it was not necessary to bridge the local-global gold price gap since it did not greatly affect the macro-economy.
However, the central bank has recently taken several moves to close such a gap, holding consecutive gold auctions to supply nearly ten tons of gold to the market.
